About
The WaterRower M1 HiRise S4 Rowing Machine is full commercial rower backed by WaterRower’s standard 3-year commercial warranty. It is called the “HiRise” because the seat is 20 inches off the floor for easier access, compared to the LoRise model with a seat 12 inches off the floor. This rower frame is fabricated from hardy tubular steel, requiring minimal care or maintenance in even the toughest of environments.

Using the same principles that govern the dynamics of a boat in water, the WaterRower M1 HiRise S4 Rowing Machine provides an unlimited range of resistance making the rower suitable for a variety of strength and skill levels. In a boat, the faster you move, the greater the drag and the greater the intensity of exercise required to maintain your speed. The limit to the speed you can maintain is you, your physiology, not the machine.
For maximum realism and comfort, the WaterRower M1 HiRise (S4)’s precision spragg clutch engages the instant the handle is pulled, so there is no jerkiness or jarring at the beginning of the stroke. The rower leaves you with the distinct sense that you are gliding effortlessly across the water.
UNIQUE WATERFLYWHEEL
The WaterRower M1 HiRise Rower unique WaterFlywheel design uses an specially formed paddle to cup the moving water, reduce slippage and produce an unrivalled simulation of the benefits of rowing;
Self Regulating Resistance – like rowing, WaterFlywheel resistance varies proportional to the users intensity. The relationship between resistance and speed responds according “the rule of cubes”. The rule of cubes dictates that a doubling of speed requires an eight fold increase in power.
Rule of Cubes
Self Paced – like rowing, the WaterRower M1 HiRise Rower WaterFlywheel does not apply resistance to you, you apply work to it; you are the engine. By the “rule of cubes”, the amount of work you apply dictates the speed at which you row. From a gentle paddle to a “give it your all” workout, you are in control.
Even Stroke – like rowing, the WaterFlywheel uses a relatively slow-moving heavy mass to generate a smooth uniform load throughout the stroke. Air resistance machines, by comparison, tend to be jerky, jarring, and uneven, fading as the resistance is overcome.
Fluid Connection – like rowing, the WaterFlywheel creates a fluid connection between rower and water using a simple immersed paddle. There is no solid mechanical connection, instead the contact between the paddle face and the water acts to dampen out any mechanical feel.
Because the WaterRower Rower has a patented Water Flywheel it uses the same physical dynamics as rowing, its operation is equally as peaceful. Simply pull the handle and you are greeted with the sound of surging water. The noise, while not silent, is soothing to the ears and is far from intrusive on.

| Specifications | |
| Infinitely Variable Resistance: | The benefit of a water resistance rower is that it most closely simulates a boat moving through water. When rowing the resistance is due to the effect of fluid drag acting on the boat. Go faster, resistance increases. Go slower resistance decreases. Importantly, the user chooses; regardless of age, gender, size or fitness. The patented WaterFlywheel emulates this naturally self-paced benefit of rowing. This is a workout you can start benefitting from immediately, regardless of experience! |
| Silent Flywheel: | Because the patented WaterFlywheel replicates the same physical dynamics as rowing, its operation is just as silent. When the handle is pulled, only the soothing sound of rushing water is heard. The frame also assists in dampening noise and vibration, making this one of the smoothest machines on the market. |
| Balanced Tear-drop Handle: | The handle is made of aluminum for strength and lightness, with a tear-drop shape that fits comfortably into the palm of the hand to minimize wrist torque - a common cause of tendonitis. Because of its strength and lightness, the drive strap of the is high-density polyester webbing, guided by nylon pulleys. The drive strap does not wear and is maintenance-free, requiring no messy lubrication. |
| Ergonomically Contoured Seat: | Supported on all four corners and ergonomically designed to provide maximum comfort, the seat is incredibly stable, gliding smoothly on eight urethane wheels. |
| Floating Heel-Rest Design: | The Rowing Machine's footboard incorporates the all-new Floating Heel-Rest design. The cup of the heel-rest follows the heel as it rises from the footboard providing stability and comfort from the beginning to end of each stroke. The heel-rest position is adjusted simply by pressing the central button to disengage the lock pins securing the footpads. |
| Tank: | The tank is made from polycarbonate, one of the strongest plastics available. It is virtually indestructible. The tank is sealed and can be filled with municipal water via a small opening closed by a stopper. This water typically contains enough chlorine to remain clear for some time. After exposure to light, the chlorine will degrade and the chlorine tablets included free, should be added periodically. |
| Dual Rails: | While attractive, they are designed to absorb sound and vibration, making for a smooth and silent stroke. These rails are part of a frame that can support over 2,200lbs of weight! |
| Spragg Clutch: | The key to the WaterRower (S4)'s smooth stroke is its "spragg" clutch that engages instantaneously. Unlike other clutches that produce a jerky or jarring impact somewhere during the stroke, the spragg clutch has no lag in pickup, which means no lower back pain for you. |

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
I see some of the home water rowers leak, does this one being a commercial one have those problems
I’ve had a Waterrower Oxbridge for over thirty years, and used it every day. t just started to leak a few drops a couple of days ago. They are very well made machines.
Answer #1 on December 7, 2021
I have owned this rower for over a year and never had any leaks of any kind.
Answer #2 January 16, 2020
What is the max height of the person rowing?
I am 6′ 4″ and have extra travel on the rail. The manufacturer shows the max inseam length at 40″. Thanks, Andy at iFitnessDirect
Answer #1 on March 25, 2018
They specify the maximum inseam length as 40″
Answer #2 on March 24, 2018
Where is it made
WaterRowers are manufactured in the U.S.
Answer #1 on June 28, 2019
Is it available with high back support?
There is not a seat accessory available with a back support. That is because it would be a restriction considering the rowing motion.
Answer #1 on August 11, 2017
What is the maximum user weight?
Weight capacity of the WaterRower M1 HiRise Rowing Machine is 1000 lbs.
Answer #1 on December 29, 2019
Their website said 700lbs The frame is constructed from powdercoated aluminum. It is very sturdy.
Answer #2 on December 29, 2019
Are there any physical benefits to it being higher off the ground and thus more expensive?
I’m not sure it is more expensive because it is higher off the ground. It is likely more expensive because of the construction- metal over wood. It is easier to get on and off due to its height.
Answer #1 on January 5, 2018
The functionality of the rower is not effected by the extra height. The lower model will work exactly the same. But, the higher model is easier to get on and off of. I purchased the higher one and am glad that I spent the extra money. It’s quite easy to hop on and off the rower during my interval workouts. 😉
Answer #2 on January 4, 2018
Fair question. I’d say we selected the higher elevation as a preference, and weren’t concerned about the price. We tried out both elevations and strongly prefer the higher of the two.
Answer #3 on January 4, 2018
Can this one be lifted when not in use like the home ones can.
Yes, very easily lifted and moved, even when at max fill of water.
Answer #1 on January 6, 2020
Yes, the WaterRower M1 HiRise Rowing Machine stands upward for vertical storage when not in use.
Answer #2 on January 6, 2020
"The machine has no moving parts that can wear out over time" Sorry but how does this clearly false claim build confidence in this rowing machine?
You’re right, definitely has moving parts…certainly a bearing and rotor and strap…but it is a solid design, you would probably wear out before the rower does.
Answer #1 on January 4, 2015
I am I able to store this in a NY, non heated garage during the winter?
I would think “no” it’s not to store this in an unheated area, since the water may freeze. If you are planning on storing it for the winter, and not using it, you could probably empty it and store it. Then, refill it when it’s warmer. I love my rower and wouldn’t take a chance on keeping it where it might freeze.
Answer #1 on November 4, 2019
The answer is yes if one of the following conditions apply – that you remove the water from the tank with the siphon that is supplied with the unit or if the temperature in the garage stays above freezing from ambient heat “leaking” in from attached structures.

"We bought the commercial version of the HiRise model with the metallic frame. Beautiful machine that works well. It's used twice a day, 5 days per week for the last 3 months by two 65-year-olds. We are glad we bought the HiRise versus floor level. No issues and assembly was fairly easy. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again. If your stroke is right, there are no dead spots in the water row cycle. Watch U-Tube videos and perfect your stroke as recommended by the manufacturer. Husband thought it was too easy until he got his stroke right. He's very fit, more like a 35-year old. We have an elliptical and he likes using both as it impacts different muscles with no-to-low joint impact between the 2 machines. Customer Service was excellent. I emailed them with a question and a real person called me on the phone :-) within the hour"

"This rower is a very sturdy, well built fitness machine. It's everything I had hoped for. I purchased the commercial hi-rise rower, with the metallic finish. It's very solid and the rowing motion is smooth and quiet. Set up was easy and fast. It gets used 3 times a day, every day and shows no signs of wear after 4 months of use. I would definitely purchase again and recommend it. I'm glad I spent the extra money on the hi-rise. I use it during interval workouts, and hopping on and off quickly is easy. Love, love, love!"

"Great product. Best rowing machine I’ve had. It’s a little pricey but looks great in our workout room and performs very well. Like the water tank as it feels and sounds like you’re actually rowing in water. The assembling takes a while as the fit is tight as you construct the rowing machine. There is no sloppiness which is good. Would highly recommend"

WaterRower M1 HiRise S4 Rowing Machine
WaterRower M1 HiRise S4 Rowing Machine WTR-M1-HIThe WaterRower M1 HiRise S4 Rowing Machine is full commercial rower backed by WaterRower’s standard 3-year commercial warranty.
The WaterRower M1 HiRise Rower unique WaterFlywheel design uses an specially formed paddle to cup the moving water, reduce slippage and produce an unrivalled simulation of the benefits of rowing;

"Best rowing machine in the market. This is the same water rower used at Orange Theory. Smooth! Quality! Incredible! I’d recommend spending the extra money on this rower. It will outlast you."
